Lonely Elephant

with 2 comments

This is Burma. She lives at the Auckland Zoo and has been waiting so very patiently for some friends to arrive from overseas. She’s been so lonely since her longtime friend Kashin died suddenly two years ago. Of course she is well looked after and has innumerable human friends, but it’s just not the same as sharing a laugh with someone who really understands…

  1. Elephants are very communal creatures. They mourn the loss of others, and they long for companionship.

    • This one is definitely longing… It took over a year since her companion died to get permission from the city to get her new companions – and only if it did not cost ratepayers anything. And now it’s been nearly another year looking for suitable candidates and raising the funds to get them here… it really feels so very sad when you see this elephant – her sense of loss is palpable.
