The animals were behaving strangely today. The bulls largely ignored me. The horses were all over me (humaniser sluts! They were looking for carrots or sugar, I am sure…) However the bull calves pranced and cavorted and did do a bit of eyelash batting. But these two… you tell me! What WERE they up to!!!
These animals were on stations on Mt Aspiring, just north of Wanaka. The paddocks for the livestock in paddocks are simply enormous, covering acres and acres. And a lot of them, like these tweeny bull-calves are completely free range. And pretty darned happy. Though these two seemed very annoyed to see me!

I don’t understand why, if they have so much DNA in common with us, they can’t have some of the same emotional reactions? Who would argue that a dog is genuinely happy to see you when you get home? Or that a monkey grieves or a cat gets angry?
Why wouldn’t we recognise reactions similar to ours in other creatures? I suspect dismissing animals’ expressions and emotions as anthropomorphism is a way of dismissing them as living, feeling beings.
I’m not an ‘animal person’ really. I’ve got one cat that I love (and two more that I coexist with…) but I am always amazed when I go out into the world and encounter animals at just how expressive and curious and emotive they are. Well, not so many sheep – they really have been bred to utter senility and seem to live in abject fear… But it is so easy to connect with them – and I don’t think it’s anthropomorphism…

I completely agree. I consider myself an animal person, and I know damned well that cats get angry and huffy and storm off like teenagers who’ve been told that they can’t go to the mall and that dogs smile, especially when you talk silly to them. And sign language has proven that primates grieve. Animals are sentient beings.
