when did you start storytelling like this? And why New Zealand? (I, too, am an expat – just not in NZ – but I have been there a couple of times.)

Hi Jill – I’ve always told stories, from the time I was a kid – it just came naturally. For a while I considered I might be a pathological liar – but I once you admit you’re telling stories – you’re free! As for telling stories ‘like this’ I can’t say – I suppose I evolve from this to that back up, find a new angle or new colour.
New Zealand – it’s fabulous – I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else after 16 years. It’s really been my lucky country. It popped up on the radar because I was a Split Enz fan back in the 80’s. Where are you living? Have you got a blog as well?

I mainly meant telling stories in the photo plus text mode – as seems so appropriate to blogging.

I am originally Australian but have lived in the UK now for over thirty years. We were in NZ (in Dunedin) for a few months, and I also sometimes visit a friend in Auckland. (I think Hahei beach may be my spiritual home!) She lives not far from Titirangi, and I recall walking there on one occasion a couple of years ago.
I blog on wordpress at jilldbarker – I hope that’s enough for you to find it – I’m a bit vague about setting up feeds and so forth. In daily life, I teach Creative Writing to undergraduates – but many of my students are so good that I have lost a lot of confidence – hence the blog as a way of trying to get back to writing. A stepping stone. And I have taken a year off this year (Oct 2010 to Oct 2011) – so maybe something will happen for me this year.
Hi Jill – silly me! I guess I think of them going together. I used to write fiction without pictures – except, I would make little folders of images from magazines that sort of went with them for myself. But pictures definitely go with blogging – anything on the net, I think. And as both an image-maker and writer, I have to include my photos in my posts. Lately they’ve been taking over, becoming the stories… I’m just letting the process happen and see what develops.
How wonderful that you have such gifted students! I sometimes despair that the language itself is dying – who remembers how to speak it much less write. Obviously, we’re travelling in different circles!
I’m having a mad week, but will take some time to look at your blog on the weekend.
