Say No! to porn update

question_markYesterday I wrote a piece on media-porn. (Scroll down to read if you would like.) Okay, I used sex to lure the reader in – but it wasn’t about sexual pornography, it was about excessive titillation in our nightly news. Almost immediately, my blog started getting Google hits – and the keywords were ‘sex’ and ‘pornography.’

This is such an absurd world. A nice glass of red wine would be just the thing to soothe my tousled psyche. Or perhaps another chat with Camus would do the trick.

  1. Hey, they say “sex sells”, and it seems their right. I often wonder though if sex doesn’t sell a little more in the west than it does elsewhere… I know when it comes to nudity, anyway, the west has scandalized something that is viewed quite differently in the east…

A society that goes so far as to sexualize even topless little girls, by attaching some sort of stigma to their nudity, is one I am not envious of. Only in America, with it’s strange dichotomy of repression and compulsion, could people get so upset about seeing a breast in a superbowl game that revolves around grown men engaging in physical combat under the guise of “sport”.

I suspect if we were all a little more dispassionate about sex, perhaps it wouldn’t be such a draw to people… I guess we could debate whether that would be good or bad, though. 😉

  2. The post was fine, your point well-taken and clear. Americans are deeply conflicted about sex and far to preoccupied with it to avoid its exploitation. News, advertising and entertainment constantly feed on our libido-driven, repressed split personalities. We are a nation of idiots.

    1. If it’s any consolation – I live in New Zealand… it’s a world-wide phenomenon – so perhaps a world of idiots. On the other hand – awareness is the first step toward change. I figure every little bit helps???
