Even the flowers are depressed

Wintergarden-fb-18I’ve had enough of winter already, thank you thank you…

It’s never really been my cuppa, even when I was a kid in the northern hemisphere in the wilds of upstate New York where the snows fell 4 feet deep and snowdays meant you got to play outside in it all day long in the middle of the week. Yeah, for me it meant the other kids would leave me alone while I curled up in bed with a book.

But that was then and this is now and there is no snow, no endless expanse of white to gaze at in the morning. Instead it’s this endless y-light, the colour of the light that manages to squeeze itself through heavy blanketing rainclouds, fat a soggy with endless drops of rain. Endlessly dreary and sad and cold and damp and, well… duh… I’m not enjoying it.

Hauled myself over to the Wintergarden in the Auckland Domain today and discovered the flowers are feeling pretty much the same as I am about the whole thing. Kinda wretched, kinda beautiful… we’ll all be happy when October gets here… but that’s sooooooooooooooo far away!

Balloons Over Waikato

with 6 comments

I am never sure if a long weekend away, one including getting up an hour before dawn – three days in a row, hauling weighty photography gear around and having six photoshoots over 3 days is a holiday. I’m pretty sure it’s not. Though it is infinitely better than hanging around the house wishing I was on holiday…

So… three days in the Waikato. We stayed at a brilliant and remarkably inexpensive homestay, a nice little one bedroom unit, with all the fresh garden veg you could pick and eat, a small flock of sheep, some heifers, and well, it was fairly idyllic. I’ll post some photos of that later – but the first set of photos I developed were from the big Final – the last dawn on Innes Commons… Every last balloon on display… it was AWEsome! In the real, true, old-fashioned awesome way that awesome used to be…

Balloons-7It all begins before dawn… so many balloons, so much space, so many people (but not TOO many)…

I need a holiday!

I need a holiday. Someplace where I can meet new people, do some different things, try new foods, fall asleep with strange sounds around me…

This is from Cabo San Lucas. This would be a good place to go… I really need a holiday!

Orderly Autumn

Orderly Autumn

You have to get out of town to see the autumn colours… We generally don’t do them well on the north island… but sometimes… sometimes we do all right

Red Cracking Bolete

No – I’m not done with the mushrooms yet… I’ve shared some of the most beautiful ones, but there are others… not quite so beautiful, like this Bolete – with a porous, spongy underside that is a bit oozy, instead of the lovely delicate gills.

This is just a bit ick. It gets worse, I promise you…
