At the end of the day

with 6 comments

During the day
you’ve got your mates around –
the gang
the flock…
but at the end of the day,
it’s just you.
No one there to tell you
that you’re right or
that you’re wrong
and you face
the dark of night
with your best friend
or your worst enemy

Golden Sunset

with 8 comments

Not sure we should be calling it Indian Summer down here, but we do… and we’re having one. This photo is straight out of the camera, slightly cropped and signed. I should be as satisfied with all of them…

Sunset At Piha

with 2 comments

I love this and hate this… Love it because it is gorgeous, hate it because it’s so traditional, a completely standard ‘great sunset’ shot. Still, it’s a great sunset shot and I did take it myself, so I am not really complaining… he he… this is the same sunset at pretty much the same time of day as the impressionist sunset I put up yesterday. This one is further away from the water – and obviously is sharply in focus.

Impressionist Sunset

with 8 comments

I have come to love impressionist photography… but then, impressionism is my favourite way of seeing things. I probably disliked Paris because the Musée d’Orsay was closed when I got there on a Tuesday morning, thereby depriving me of the opportunity to be in the presence of the Degas paintings that inspired my love of ballet (though they could not provide the talent that can’t possibly exist in a 5’6″ girl with size 10 feet, no matter how many hours I practised.)

Don’t know when or if I’ll ever get back there, but there’s a Degas to Dali exhibit touring from the Scottish National Gallery that is parked at the Auckland Art Gallery for the next couple of months that might soothe my longing…

Or, of course, I could make my own… This one is so very simple (not even a bird?!?) but I just love the colours and the glassiness of the waves. Hard to believe it’s a seriously ferocious surf beach. Hard to believe this is just a few miles down the road from me…

One lady leaping

Went through over 600 images shot last night. To be honest, most were plain crap… I deleted over 300. Then I deleted another 100. Then I starting culling in earnest… and in the end, came up with such a brilliant set of photos, I feel like I invented candy and can’t wait to tell all my friends…

I’ll probably end up posting most of them on here as the days go by, but I put together an album on facebook that you can access by clicking here. No need to friend me or be on facebook yourself.

Dancer on the beach

with 6 comments

Just a quick one tonight… Went to Piha Beach this evening to shoot the sunset and a dancer who came to dance for a group of photographers. Sadly, she got lost on the way so we didn’t get to shoot her in the best light. I did get some nice stuff though and am especially fond of this impressionist shot.

Quite a long exposure with another photographer’s flash throwing a bit of light on her in the middle of the exposure. She was a wonderful dancer – but it occurs to me she looks a bit unsteady on her feet – like a wave might come and sweep her away.
