Alpine Dawn

with 9 comments

It’s actually a bit after dawn, the sun still very low in the sky, the mist rising from the lake, shuffling along like an old man on his first trip to the loo for the day.

For those who are used to more regular posts, I do apologise – it just seems I’ve lost my mojo for the moment – don’t know where it’s got to. I try to come up with an image and a few words and nothing works. It’s flat or feels forced or simply dull or been done a thousand times before. I do hate that feeling, though by now I know it will pass.

In the meantime, I give this one a merit… but when I merit’s all you can come up with, maybe it’s the thing you have to go with. And there’s no shame in that…

Mt Aspiring Mist

with 4 comments

Spent a good part of today sorting out photos for a competition. It’s a funny sort of thing to do – amazing how those ‘great’ photos you adored when you took them (and blogged them!) don’t stand up over time. And funny how some of them do. This is actually the very first photo I ever put into any kind of competition. It was judged as a beginner’s photo and received honours – which gave me huge confidence, much needed at the time.

Came upon it again today and thought I should have lightened up those shadows a bit and surely there must have been an adoring bull lurking somewhere, popping his head in… but just because we have the technology, doesn’t mean we should be using it… I like it just fine – just the way it is

Flock on the move

with 5 comments

I have to say it’s damned hard to follow up my beautiful grazing sheep. But – it’s not a competition.

And I rather like this overexposed flock of ducks on the run in the early morning hour. It was so still, the only thing I could hear was their wings.

Aspiring bull

with 5 comments

We made our annual jaunt up Mount Aspiring today. Cloudy, cold and rainy, beautifully bleak. Got some amazing scenery shots, but had to go with this close up of a black angus bull. What a handsome devil!

Whilst there are fences and paddocks and some of the farmers to make some semblence of containing the livestock, it is quite normal to see bulls, cows and sheep ambling all over – sometimes right in the road.  This guy was just a few feet from the car and I shot from the window. Yes, he was peaceful and harmless as could be – but I prefer not to foolishly tempt fate. Especially since he was happy to raise his head for a photo.

While it’s true that he will ultimately end up on someone’s dinner plate, he has the most marvelous life – completely free range, grass fed, health looked after, plenty of congenial companions… nothing to complain about.

The short version of the Mt Aspiring story is we stayed at the bottom and made our way to the top. We arose two hours before dawn so we could watch the sun rise – but to be honest, that far south, it doesn’t come up til eight in the morning this time of year, so I can’t say it was terribly cruel.

There is no reason for words to be honest – the photos speak for themselves… click on them for a full-screen picture.

Mt Aspiring is outside Wanaka, New Zealand. We were there from the 10th to the 15th of this month – the ‘off’ season.
