Falcon Flight

with 4 comments

Another shot of the NZ falcon – soaring… Really, really fast – this was snapped at 1/8000th of a second. Trying to track and shoot something moving that fast was a bit of a challenge, but very satisfying.

Flight of the Falcon

Most of my flight images were pretty much rubbish. These birds fly at speeds up to 250 kilometres per hour, so catching them, focussing on them, is near impossible even with the new 70-200mm lens along with its 2x extender. And, full disclosure, I took this one into photoshop because the sky was nearly blown out and the bird was a wee bit darker. So I had a play with the contrast and came up with this, which makes me rather happy.

Flock on the move

with 5 comments

I have to say it’s damned hard to follow up my beautiful grazing sheep. But – it’s not a competition.

And I rather like this overexposed flock of ducks on the run in the early morning hour. It was so still, the only thing I could hear was their wings.

Take off…

Nature’s  creatures just don’t fear me. At least, not if they’ve settled in for a rest. I hardly had to crop this image… this giant brown seagull had nearly a metre wing span (39″) I’d say – just huge, almost the size of an albatross, with none of the albatross’s charm or mystique. I rather like seagulls, just for being birds. And if, as a species, they are not charismatic, from time to time one will do something of interest to us.

This one was determined NOT to be that seagull. I was so close I could smell his breath and he wouldn’t move. I was just close enough to tap him in his lazy bum, when he decided to take off. Got him at a starting run here. Got a few more as he hit the air and began to fly. Completely missed the shot of him doubling back and circling over my head – and with the precision of a military smart-weapon, dumping a slimy lime green turd on my head!

Feeling flat – a friend of mine was killed in a bus crash in Mexico along with five others this past week. Didn’t find out until I got home.  She was spending a year travelling on her own, seeing the world and learning more about who she was and trying to figure out what she wanted to do next.

I always thought she made being FABulous look easy… though she was doing the work.. including the hard stuff.

We weren’t close – neither of us had the time, always meant to get together for dinner or something, but life and work and travel always got in the way and we would meet up at a mutual friend’s or run into each other in town and catch-up and promise not to let so much time pass before we got together again. And now she’s gone and we won’t be catching up…
