Cleo’s fronds

with 5 comments

You could argue that this has been photoshopped past being a photograph, and I wouldn’t argue. But what I like about was what you see – all those lines, on the palm frond, their stems, the windows, the smaller palms feathering up from below… I am pretty sure these are the very palms that wafted breezes past Cleopatra as she sweltered in the scorching Egyptian sun. Their life is a tad easier these days…

Misty River morning

with 4 comments

Winter has taken on a dreamy surrealistic feel about now. We’ve never had more rain than we’ve had in the last few months. The endless pounding of rain on the roof; the bending, arching trees; the Y-light nothing colour that you can almost see through to a world that seems almost there. We did have a couple days break – the skies cleared to a perfect winter blue – accompanied by blue temperatures, frozen feet and the electric blanket turned up high… I am so very over it about now, thank you… Please don’t tell me there is at least another month! I wish I wish that summer would last this long – even half as long would be nice…

The solution? Head for the snow! Not until Friday, but a bit of ‘proper’ winter always cheers me up!

Another orchid?

with 2 comments

Been feeling a little ‘dry’ lately – no flashes of inspiration or unexpected revelations. Going to have to go with the very safe and rather lovely cymbidium from the orchid show I went to last week.

Went to a great exhibit today though, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit – very inspirational, but also, sorta puts me in my place because there is no way on earth I’m hopping into Arctic waters in my snorkel gear to get up close and personal with a swimming polar bear. No… not ever, not in a hundred lifetimes…

Technicolor gloomy day

with 2 comments

No sun. Clouds so heavy they felt like a blanket covering it all, a drippy blanket at that… but those blue blue waters of the south island just never give up. They just keep on flowing bluer than blue. No matter how you feel.

Jeez – I hate missing out on being here so many days in a row, but it’s been a bit full on lately.

Went to the  winter show of the Auckland Orchid Society yesterday… I have been to various flower and garden shows over the years, but nothing quite like this… and I don’t think I’ve ever taken a photo of a flower quite like this… I’m pretty pleased with myself… What do you think?

If I was James Bond

with 7 comments

Aerial view of a ski resort in the Remarkables.

If I was James Bond or Indiana Jones
I would leap down,
land on top of the slope
and make my way from there,
ending up at the lodge
with a nice brandy waiting for me.

But I am not.

So I won’t.
