Panama Morning

San Diego to San Diego – 28 nights – west to east and then east to west. This shot is take from the top of the ship as we approached the first set of locks going east to west. The day was glorious in a tropical scorcher kind of way.

We were all ready – out on deck, cameras, panama rolls, panama hats.

Nope, no sign of Panama Red – after all, we were in international waters… doesn’t mean there wasn’t a wee bit of a Wookstock revival happening though musically – at least I’m pretty sure that wasn’t a couple members of New Riders of the Purple Sage I heard singing soft and low here and there…

I made a 2-minute video/slide show of the passage which you can see by clicking here if you are curious.

  1. Panama red? Tee hee . . .

My dad went through the Panama Canal when he was a deep sea merchant marine. His brother went through for a vacation. I’m still waiting for my trip through.

    1. We did it cheap as chips (almost). About $5500US for both of us in an oceanview cabin on the Holland America Maasdam From San Diego to Fort Lauderdale and then back. Nice ship, great amenities, and the company doesn’t nickle-and-dime you to death like Princess. I do believe it was a flash fare – bought 3-4 weeks before we sailed. If we’d gone just the one direction over 2 weeks, it was something like $2900. So around $100pp/day not bad considering transport accommodation and food are included. And there’s lots of fun stuff to do on the ship. It really was one of the best cruises ever… Not sure what the regular price might be – a bit more… but we don’t mind when we travel and don’t have a problem with last minute planning.
If you want to go – start planning… it may take a while – but you WILL get there!!!
