Through the Light

Just before Christmas, brutally cold in Manhattan, wind whipping like a lash, dashing from shop to shop, warmth to warmth. Mostly laughing but also freezing. And wishing.

Then we stepped in Henri Bendel where we were given cider and macadamia chocolate cookies and stopped and stared in awe. And while my frugal nature would never ever allow me to purchase a handbag that cost a week’s salary, never mind a month or two – it was utterly indulgent being there, picking them up, turning them over and admiring the exquisite workmanship. Mmmm… I’m so glad I snapped this photo…

    1. Exactly! It’s not that I won’t spend money – I have been very indulgent from time to time (when time and money permit). But I prefer spending money on experiences rather than things – and the indulgent things tend to be very special – not something I’d carry around and have to worry about it getting dirty or lost or stolen. Still, these handbags were objets d’arts and I did appreciate them…

  1. There is nothing better than the perfect handbag, and I am ashamed to admit that if I did have money, this is the one thing that I would indulge in for myself. Squishy leather, the smell, the feel. Lovely.

    1. Then Henri Bendel would have been doubly divine! I do admire and sometimes envy them – but if I had a choice between one of those bags and a cattle class ticket to Europe – peal me into that sardine can, boys! I’m ready to fly! (Come to think of it, that usually is pretty much the choice… especially since the school uniforms, university tuition and orthodontia are all done with!)
