Telling tales from around the world

The Swamp Down the Road

with 4 comments

This swamp was a couple of miles down the road from my house. If you were coming home on your bicycle from the pool, which was another 3-4 miles further, you’d have to come this way. It was scary even when there were 3 or 4 of us – but all too often I’d find myself stealing past it alone, walking the bike because I was  terrified of being snatched off my seat as I rode.

It was just plain scary – even though I’d never even heard rumours of anything bad happening. No bodies, no mummies, no werewolves or axe murderes. Still I heard the screams and howls – and don’t go telling me they were just owls and hound dogs baying at the moon. You weren’t there.

  1. Nicely written…I could feel the creepiness as I read the first few lines.
