Maybe she is hesitating because she knows exactly what awaits her should she climb those stairs. Could be she has climbed them many a time before and now needs the courage not to do so again. I have been there.
Ooh, interesting take on it… the stairs do look more inviting than the dull corridor to her left. Hmmm… I have been there too, but for a different reason or in a different way I guess.
